Read the Reviews:  "Shovelhead Red;  The Drifter's Way"    by Uncle Roy

"I be doin' life, 'know aht ah'm sayin'?  Da man thank he got me!  'Den I fine 'dis rightous book 'bout 'Shubble head Red'.  Now my spirit be ridin' wile an' free."  - Inmate #123456 (da Prision Poet), Angola, LA.

"Mamma Mia!  Whatta book-a!  I'ma berry impressed!  Thata 'Shovelheada Reda", He'sa one bad-assa somonabeech!  Thees-a boook,... she'sa makea me weesh I am a biker!"  -  J.P. (Da Pope), spiritual consultant (translated from the original Latin)

"Who ain't a fuckin' qualified book critic?  Ya wanna come OUTSIDE an' tell ME I AIN'T NO FUCKING BOOK CRITIC?  Ya pencil-necked mutha-fucker!  The fucking' book rocks, an' that's that!  Now, get outta muh goddam face!"  - "Mangler" [An unknow biker very eloquently delivered this opinion during a typical literary debate in a biker beer joint, somewhere on the road.  It should be noted that no teeth were harmed during this review]

"Oh sure, the book is a fantastic story that will be loved by those 'motorsickle types'.  But where is the MORAL lesson for our precious innocent children?  Frankly, there is none.  In fact, this book advocates 'having fun' just for fun's sake, which wa all know is just plain wrong.  It also encourages individual thinking.  That is clearly dangerous to impressionable young minds.  I've preached numerous sermons waning America about how you're gonna get this kind of thing when free speech is granted to just anybody.  Video tape of sermons, available for a small 'Love Offering'.  But, to ge back to my critique; I think 'Shovelhead Red' should be banned and the existing copies burned!"  -  The Right Reverend I.B. Klewliss,  writing in: BIBLE BANGERS; Magazine for the Mono-Minded.

Dear Uncle Roy and BC,

Haha! But I plan to make it as soon as possible when it gets warm weather again. Just got back from Oklahoma for Thanksgiving. Tell Roger and Pam I'll see them at the Tatoo Convention in Greensboro in January.
Until then ....ride and have fun and learn some new jokes. Tell MaryLou I said "HI" too. See ya later.
The "Heathen" - HighPoint, NC

1.rider's roost is a place wife and i definitey wish to visit in spring 2001. i am a member of "international star riders association" (4000 members) and our nc events coordinator includes rider's roost on our list of camping places. wife loves to ride with me; however, is Not a tent person; therefore, when
we get the calendar arranged, our intent is to look at your cabins.
2.  i noticed your piece on weddings and as a retired pastor i have been asked about "motorcylce weddings" and would like to speak to/email a pastor who is conversant with the subject.
3. thanks for providing a great place for riders.
kirk

Shawn & Carla:
We met ya'll at Myrtle Beach two years ago and have finally checked out your web site. Looks great we will be comming to visit this summer.

Guy and Sue Blankenship:
Great website. Good directons with a "down to earth" approach that is refreshing and informative. Good pictures of your location.

Todd Farrell:
You cats got it goin' on. I'm from allentown pa. area and as far as i know we don't have anything like this up here in pensyltucky. Around here you have to bring the family in the car then sneak out to get the scooter. On your way back in you hope they don't see or here you so you don't have to listen to the scooter trash schpeel about loud noise orWE HAVE RESPECTABLE PEOPLE here who don't apriciate YOUR KIND.All you beer drinking slobs do is cause trouble were ever you's go.It's nice to know that a brother got a place to kick back with family or bro's to have a good relaxing time camping. You folks are in no means are outside of my riding distance.I have recently broke my back in a constuction accident but by riding season 2002 i should be in good shape(and in need of a vaca)to travil in your direction.I hope to see ya's at that time triumphdude1 out.Good luck to all and always keep the KNEES IN THE BREEZE.

Ed Redington:
Hey,
Neat and complete e-site.  I plan to make it there this summer, just don't have a date yet.  I am guessing somewhere around July 4.  That may be a big weekend at the Roost.  I will be camping, but don't get involved with the food part.  Guess you said coffee was available and restaurants were reasonably close. Thanks for showing me around the roost.

DONNA DAUGHTREY:
Jody and I miss you all very much.  Sue, I fell in love with your home after you took me inside.  I am in the process of trying to find land and build a home very similar to your.  If you have any pictures of the layout or inside or outside, please e-mail them to me.  Mabe we can ride up for the day real soon.  We sold our bike.  (and bought a camper).  Hope to hear from you soon.  Love and Peace   Jody (Brad Pitt) and Donna/Hickory nc
(Lori and Lonnies friends)

Mitchell Storm:
GREAT PLACE! GREAT TIME!Looking foward to our next trip!

David Crosby:
Gotta to come an see YA!!!! see you!! DAVID

Raven:
Damn...I am livin' here in Oklahoma now and I was just searchin' the net for biker fun and BANG...I see this link to this place!!
Ya see...I used to live in Hickory and some guys I knew in a band invited me up there...*thinks*...damn near 10 years ago...
We partied on the deck...when it was new...we had a blast in the creek and enjoyed the sounds of the bikes late that night...
Just wanted to share my memories and say how great the place looks...Keep up the good work...we biker types need places like the roost...so much has changed out here in the modern world...it's cool to see how some things don't have to change!!
Later-      Raven

Graywolf:
Uncle Roy, we were the wet 'rats' that rolled in on Friday eve. late...thanks for having us up.  Even with the rain and maybe because of it - it was the best nights sleep I've had in a long time.  The 'Roost' is beautiful and every time we're there it's a pleasure.

Sheri Stern:
I really enjoyed my stay at Rider's Roost toward the end of a solo 1200+ mile trip. Too tired to put up my tent at the end of the day, I opted for a cabin beside the beautiful stream. It was just what I needed.

Tracey Powell:
I've never heard of Rider's Roost until this weekend and it looks like a great place for a biker and his babe (ME!) to come hang out for a weekend.  We hope to be coming for a visit in September.  What a great way to spend a birthday, huh?

Joy Ferguson:
Was given directions to "Riders Roost" by a person who highly recommended visting you.  Just checking out your website and hopefully soon will be checking it out personally.  We just bought our first Harley.

Glen Long:
This place looks like motorcycle campers heaven.  I'm anxious to try it out  and that's just what I'm going to do this weekend.  Save me a good tent site for this Friday.

David & Mitzi Hawkins:
We've been going to Lake Lure for a couple years and are looking for another nicer place to visit.  We love to ride and have a group of friends that ride also. Planning a ride to Deals Gap. Hope to see you soon.

Steve Sartain:
Hey Roy, I was with the group from Monroe last weekend. I was on the black and silver Fatboy. You have a damn fine place and I hope to get back there b4 winter. Oh man one thing, you really need a payphone...lol........but it was great dude! Cya

Amy:
I have heard of the Roost through my brother in law that died April 22 2001 due to an accident on my Dads motorcycle ,I really enjoyed his stories and your webpage thanks so much for the memories that the "Roost" gave to him.

Mike Sutton "Bulldog":
Hey,

Found your site on the web....I'll be back with the wife and friends....
I'll pass the word on to a "FEW" friends about ya ....Don't want a big crowd!!!

Kent&LIsa Fogelson:
We had a great time this year on our visits to the Roost.
This is our first year. But will not be our last. The close and easy
trips to some of the most beautiful parts of the country make
this the place to be.We hope to see more of our friends there soon.

Duane and Patty Shambaugh:
Hi! My wife and I are planning our first ride on the parkway starting
in Pennsylvania on September 29th. The roost has been recommended by
several riding friends. Hopefully we will be stopping in, if not we
want to thank you for your dedication to motorcycle riders everywhere.

MIKE SMITH:
I HAVE BEEN TO YOUR PLACE 3 TIMES,IT WAS BACK IN THE MID TO ERLY 90"S AND WE HAD A HELL OF A TIME.I MEET SOME GOOD PEOPLE THERE AND ME AND MY FUTURE X OL"LADY WILL GO THERE AGAIN.ANYONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT GOING SHOULD GO AND CHECK IT OUT.THE"LL HAVE A GOOD TIME.THANKS FOR SOME GOOD TIMES THERE>>>>>>>>>>>MIKE SMITH FROM MT.AIRY

Nate Choate:
I recently read about your establishment in one of my motorcycle magazines.  After riding the blue ridge parkway from Ashville to Boone I decided your geographic area is motorcycling heaven.  After perusing your site I look forward to making reservations for late spring in the very near future.  You seem to have created the perfect facility, in the perfect place for truly enjoyable motorcycling.

Big Mike:
Merry Christmas Roy, Mary Lou, Sjue, and BC. Thanks for your hospitality and friendship over the last few years. I hope this Holiday Season is filled with much joy for you and yours.
"Big Mike" and the rest of the Old Bastards

Uncle Roy, My first trip to your place was 4 yrs.ago. Since then, I was in a bad bike crash. Total lost my FLHS. I rebuilt it from the ground up. Then I was told I had a terminal liver disease. My doctors told me to take it easy. I said I would when I couldn't swing my leg over the saddle.. July 26th 2003, I came back. Just wanted you to know that I was able to clear my head after a very long time. Although I am in a lot of pain , I plan to to ride to fla the 25th. To all you people that just don't feel like getting up and going, I challenge you to live every day like it was your last. Make peace within your self and to everyone you know. You never know when your last ride will be. Think about it. E-mail me if you want . In the wind-on the wind-own the wind. Carlona Billy

Just wanted to say what a fantastic place the roost is. I rode up 10/3 with my son Scott and group for a weekend (cold ride Friday night). Everything and everyone was great -- what a place to escape to have fun and relax. I love your simple rules and have rearranged them into what I call the "No CAT & DAWG rules -- NO Children I hope to continue coming back with the group.

Hi Roy, You will probably not remember me but I came to the Roost a few years back with Lynn Mashburn. I had a wonderful time and it was absolutely beautiful there! Thank you so much for your hospitality and I hope to get to come back soon. I know that Lynn and Wade are planning on being there at the Spring Fling in June. I wish that I could be there too. I am in the great state of Maine and I miss the South very much. I am originally from Kentucky (Lynn is too), we went to school together. She is my greatest friend and I miss her bunches. Well, it is great to see your website and to see the great pictures from your trip. I have always wanted to go out to Montana and I will go there before I leave this world. Well, I hope to see you again in the future. Give Lynn and Wade my love when you see them at the Spring Fling!!! A Friend, Denise Mize-Biette

Man let me tell ya. I have been to parties and I have been to parties but I have never partied like I partied at the July 17th weekend at the Roost. Went stag this time and did not have to entertain anyone but myself and that I did. The band was as great as all the new friend I met. Guys from my Airforce day were there and talk for a good while with them. War stories galore. If you go to the Roost, you will have a good time if you let youself have a good time. I don't dance but because it was my birthday and with a few intoxcating beverages in me, I seem to have gotten the rythum. MAN even one of my new biker friends stated that for a recovering tough guy I had some pretty good moves. Mary Lou,the now camp queen and PR person would not let me stop dancing. There is no hastle at the Roost. Can's ask for a better host than big ole Unckle Roy. Although his joke on Firday nite get thing rolling anyone can get up to the mike and have a chance of making and ass of himself. I know the feeling, been there did that. The river is another eye catcher. looking upstream from the camp area and view will mesmerise you. I can stand for an hour watching the water break over the numerious falls and flow fast down to the lower falls beyond the lower camp cabins. What a view. If you have not camped here, your missing it. The events have become a absolutely thing to do when they come about. The participants are becoming family and good friends. Aint nothin like rolling into the parking lot and have 7 or 8 friends from past camps yell out you name and aplaude that you showed up for another good time weekend at the roost. I will be there and if you dont introduce youself thats you fault... ride safe BOSTON TOM

Hey guys, I was at the Labor Day party 2004. It was my first time at the Roost but it will not be my last. I met some great people and had a great time. The ride down was an experience itself. Four Harleys through the mountains of Va. and NC. on beautiful sunny days (there and back), what more could you ask for. See ya again next year. Oh by the way, Roy's standup was some funny shit! I've got a break from school coming in mid October, and I'd like to come see you guys. Anyways, I'm gonna try to call you soon, so wait by the phone until that time. Take it easy. I was lookin to order a copy of Shovelhead Red for myself for Christmas (It's the only thing on my list! Well, that and peace...) Says a lot I guess, when the only thing ya got on yer list is Shovelhead Red! Much to be thankful for here in Vikkiville. Actually, this is comin to ya from upstate New York, and it's a real cold one today. Bright and sunny, but frigid. My bike (V-Star, Classic) is parked in the downstairs bedroom for the winter. The V-Creature, as I call er, is decorated like the tree, lights and all, feelin festive as hell, hollarin out to me, "Hey, let me outta here! The sun is shinin bright and high in the sky in the sky!! And the roads are dry!" But my man had enough of me bein almost frost-bit to death back in November, so, she's parked for the winter. Like it or not. But that gives me time to make plans for next year. And I gotta tell ya, if there's one place in the world this northcountry woman wants to come, it's down to yer place. I hope to make it next summer sometime. I ride alone, so this would give me some opportunity to co-mingle a spell with some other bikerlys. Had a dream last night I was ridin on the tops of evergreens, close to the sky. Thought it was these Adirondacks that I love so ardently. But maybe it was them big ones y'all have down yer way, a sort of forecast of good things to come. What a place you evidently have! Lookin forward to seein it, ridin it, breathin it, drinkin it, bathin in it, sleepin in the great cradley arms of it, like a baby. Best of the season to y'all. Thanks for bein. Yer sister in chaps, Vikki

Hey Uncle Roy! I enjoyed meeting you and Mary Lou last night at th Gray Area in Asheville! I sincerely hope you had as much fun as we did! The web site looks terrific! You have a beautiful place there at "the Roost". I would be VERY interested in helping you provide some musical entertainment to your clientele in the future. In addition to "The Busmasters" that you heard Saturday night, I also work with a Bluegrass/ Folk Fusion band called "The Travelers Club" that plays more of a "New Grass" style that most people seem to enjoy. I also have contacts with a couple hundred or so area musicians and bands representing any style of music you may need. I LOVE the location and area around "Riders Roost", and would love to visit some time. Please let me know if I can help your business with your entertainment or marketing needs. My phone number is (828)298-8412 and my e-mail address is pedaltone2000@yahoo.com Please don't hesitate to contact me if you can use me! It was a pleasure meeting you. Best of luck in your business. -Greg

Funniest thing is the day I finished the book, I had this urge to go have a shot of Jose for Shovelhead Red. So sitting at my favorite biker bar, up pulls a guy on his Harley that could pass for Red. I couldn't contain myself, and sent him to the RR website. Life is funny like that! Take care Uncle Roy! Hope you've recovered from Daytona! Thanks again, Heidi

I do believe I'd prefer to stay in one of your cabins though. Are your rates per person or per cabin? I'd love to hear from ya'll. My ex still lives in Ferguson off Mount Zion Road and he rides his Harley everywhere, so he has probably been in to pay you a visit. Good luck on your venture. I'm sure it's a huge success. Had a blast at the '05 Summer Rage!!! Roy and BC have put together the ultimate biker's retreat. Haven't been that relaxed in years. Pitched my tent without even checking the ground...not so much as a pebble under me...slept like a baby. Clean and private toilets and shower rooms. Plenty of damned good riding with anything from routes with attention-getting cutbacks to just plain ole relaxing, winding, country roads. The band for the Summer Rage (Rock Bottom) was a damned good band, and the Roost had plenty of room for dancing and getting silly (for those of us who can't dance...and we know who we are don't we?). The Roost will be an annual destination for me...hell, several times a year I hope. Keep up the good work Roy and BC...be seeing you soon.

We stayed at the Roost this past weekend (Oct. 01, 2005) and had a blast! 'We' are a group of riders from the place we work. On this trip, 'we' were a group of only 5, but have been a group as high as 11. We have stayed at several 'motorcycle only' campgrounds, and while all of them have been enjoyable, we had the most laughs and the most carefree time at the Roost!! Thanks for your side splitting songs, Uncle Roy!! You are a hoot! We do look forward to next year and patronizing this fun place for Riders to Roost. Have a safe winter. Skip.

What's up Uncle Roy and Marylou. For our first visit to the roost, I will have to say it will not be the last. I plan on spreading the word to lots of other biker friends so if everyone likes it as much as we did you might be having to add more cabins in the future just to keep up with the demand. We will be seeing ya'll next spring. while I'm thinking about it, I left a hatchet under the picnic table at the tent site. If you find it throw it in the corner somewhere and I will get it on my next visit. I have had that thing for over 25 years. yall all have a good one and try to keep warm this winter.

It'll be good to catch up on the years. Take care & see you soon. Sicerely, Rick "Sundance" Parent Chief Engineer SeaLand Comet

Please use the attractive young lady in the modeling of the clothes. The furry gentleman is not a good sales representative.
